Where We Are Headed

In the novel, A Brave New World, by author Aldous Huxley, it predicts the future world where everything is totally controled by the government, all the citizens are mindless and emotionless, and there is a completely savage village with people canibalizing and sacrifcing each other out side of the new world.

In Huxley’s novel, there are four main aspects of the world it describes: Economy, Politics, Technology and Science. In the novel, the economy is totally controlled by the government. The government controls what kind of jobs the people do and its all organized by cast. http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/macquekl/History%20Web%20Page/History/women%20factory%20workers.jpg. The government controles the peoples emotions by giving them medication called soma. Soma’s kind of like alcohol, drugs or anti-depressants. So in ways, our world now it sort of like in Huxley’s novel. But in our future, I predict that the economy will be extremely more controlled by government because there will be so much more people in the world that things will be so chaotic the only way for people to be civil is to be controled.

The next aspect is politics. In the Novel, everything is controlled by a few extremely important people. Our politics now is a little the same. The president of the U.S. controles a lot of what happens, goes in and out of the country, and the policies that our country has. He makes decisions that he thinks will better us all as a whole. Although Americans do have the right to vote, and we have a say in laws etc. but there are many things the the people of America do not have control of. Many things, I’m sure, are rigged by the few people that are in control of America. But in our future I think that it will only get worse, and people wont have a vote on many things that we do now. I think things will be so populated and chaotic that everyone will try and take control and not be fair about recourses. Resources such as oil, which is running our will be extrememly hard to come by. Nearly everyone on the plant uses oil as a transportation etc. America alone spends $200,000 per minute, $13,000,000 every hour and $25,000,000,000 every year on oil. Pretty soon people will start getting shady with there oil cinsumption. Hopefully scientists are working on finding a more economic and healthier way for us all to get around. http://norwichvineyard.co.uk/Images/content/574/262882.jpg

The third aspect is technonogy. In the novel, everyone was working in factories to create human beings. Now days people are working in factories to manufacture our current technology: mobile devices such as cell phones, better ways to access the internet, etc. And everyday our technology grows further and further to create newer and better things. Now everything is hands free, digital and makes everything easier for the average person to do. Everyone is so distracted by there televisions and cell phones that it’s hard for people to pay attention to simple things. Soon, I think, it will make a hectic situation and it will make it hard for people to deal with everyday situations. http://mymill.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/information-technology.jpg

The last and in my opinion, most important aspect of the novel is the science. In the novel, like I said, there are people on factory lines creating human beings. Science in the novel has gotten so advanced that they are able to scientificly make millions of people, and create them with deficientcies, or plus’s to make them a part of certain classes. Scientists now have already started to do similar things with people, by geneticly mutating them; when parents of a certain child both have brown eyes, and they want there child to have blue eyes, they can have a mega scientist tweak the fetus’s DNA to make the child have blue eyes; This is true with many different things with humans now. Also since science will be so developed, they will probly have better ways to cire people, less birth defects, etc. to keep more people alive longer, making the population rate rise. Which will leave less resources for everyone to share. http://www.cmrus.com/assets/images/inside_pics/technology.jpg

All in all I think our future is looking pretty grim, because of population on the rise there wont be resources enough for everyone to live off of. Which will cause people to get shady and start wars.

Arizona immigration laws

Thursday april 22nd 2010 the US senate came up with a proposal to change the immigration laws in Arizona. There has been much controversy regarding this topic, because many people feel that it leads to racial profiling. People are saying that it is an unconstitutional way to control some outragious immigration aspects.

What the law is saying is, if you’re a latino coming to the state of Arizona on a visa or for visitation, than you must have your pass to be in America at all times, but this will lead to many latino (legal or not) people being profiled and stoppped randomly to show there citizenship or visa to be here. They do not have to be doing anything wrong in order to be stopped.

I do not think this is fair becuase officers are only here to stop violence and offenders from doing something wrong that can be harmful to the rest of the republic. If a latino person is walking down the street minding his own business, not doing anything harmful, he should not be stopped just because he is suspected of being an illegal immigrant.

But there is another aspect of the situation. How else will authorities know if a person is an illegal immigrant if they don’t stop the person and ask. The thing that’s wrong is that they’re only doing it to latino’s. I don’t know if there is any better way to go about the immigration situation, but it’s deffinately not the best thing to do in this case.

Morgan Hill High School Cinco De Myo Drama:

On wednesday may 5th 2010, 5 high school students from morgan hill high school wore U.S. patriotic outfits on a national mexican holiday. If I were an administrator at the high school,I wouldnt have done anything about it. Those students were oblviously looking for some kind of attention, and thats what they got. A lot of latino people were affended by it, but one mother of one of the students that “dressed up” for the holiday said that her student is half mexican and that they didnt think it was affensive at all.

I think its really affensive because those students that wore the patriotic clothing were obviously trying to make a statement about latino’s and trying to make them feel lower on their national holiday. Although cynco de myo isn’t celebrated in Mexico, or any other country in South America, it just goes to show those kids are uneducated with their insults. I think the whole idea just makes those people look stupid.

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill

On april 20th, 2010,  there was an oil rig explosion near the gulf of Mexico’s coast line. This left a huge hole in the pipeline that delivered the oil to the rig, from the ground. now that the hole is in the pipe line, it gushes hundreds and hundreds of gallons of raw oil everyday. But now, over a month after the explosion, studies show that there were three different issues that occured an hour before the explosion happened, leading up to it. these three incidences probably cause the explosion to happen in the first place. If BP wouldve just shut the whoole thing down when problems first arrised, than the oil spill wouldnt be as disasterous as it is now.

the three incidents that happened, as told by witnesses, were that there was oil spurting out of the well, and preassure tests resulted in a very large abnormality in the well.

The latest on the oil spill is that BP is trying to contain the oil by injecting heavy drilling fluids through the blow out down to the well. Scientists are not yet sure if this plan will help the problem, but there have been many attempts to try to find s solution. I remember one of them was to put a cap on the area of the well that has been leaking, and try to contain all the oil they can and keep it from getting into the ocean water, but that didnt work. I think the best idea is to put the giant floaty ropes around the oil thats leaking, and try and contain it like that, because the oil just sits on the surface of the water. But that takes a lot of time and man power.

One of the major problems im worried about with the oil spill is the sea life and the money that BP will be loosing from the loss of so much oil. Gas and oil prices will now be soaring because of the loss, and that will damage our economy greatly. Also the sea life that will die; millions of crustations will die and that where alot of those southern states make there money, is by sea food. Also the birds that are usually finding there food where the oil is spilling. They will be covered in oil and most will likely die.

I know these are few problems compared to the bigger picture, and there are probly many other problems on the rise, but these problems are going to effect the long term economy. But hopefully BP will fix the damages, and within a few years, to a decade, things will be almost back to normal, or atleast fixed.

Man Gets Sentenced to 25 Years In Prison

Today, a man from long island, New york, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for stabbing another man to death. The other man was from Ecuador, and the stabbing was known as a hate crime. The man that did the stabbing was elegidly only 17 at the time,  and was related to a few other gangs in New York, obviuosly making it easier for the court to sentence him to this maximum time in prison.

If i had read more about this story, i would deffinately have more to say, but this was an extremely short, non-descriptive article, and the story goes back to 2008 when the stabbing actually happened. This article just happened to catch my eye.

One of the only reasins im writing ont this article is because it has to do with gang violence and a hate crime against a certain race. I think the idea of being in a gang is so stupid. There is no upside except for making money, and the only way out is death. Gangs are nothing but people getting together to try and make money because most of the people are so uneducated they’re too afraid to get out on there own and start there own life. Instead they couldve made a difference in the world, but they chose to kill, do crime and cause violence. I think its sad, because now there lifes are wasted.

Another thing is the hate crimes. Why hate against another certain race seperate from your own. There are many hundreds of different races out in the world. We all have to live here sharing the planet and helping eachother out. Killing a someone from a certain races isnt going to get you anywhere. I think its just wrong to hate on terms like that.

End Of My Senior Year

Looking back on my past four years at rancho, im honestly glad to be finally graduating. The feeling is bitter sweet and sometimes i second guess my self on wheather im ready to actually graduate or not but when i really think about it i know i am ready. its just freaky because Ive been in school pretty much ever since i can remember. School has be my life for the past 13 years, and every morning of every week of every year, it has been an obligation of mine to go to school. Now that im out of high school, im not obligated to go to school, i have the decision to go or not. Its up to me now to make something out of myself. Im not obligated to do anything and that kind of freedom is scary. because i could spend a few years just slacking and not going anywhere with my education.

but i also do have high hopes for myself. when i look at my life in the future i can see my self in my own salon, doing hair and make up and making a good living for my self and my family. Im thankful for all of my experiences and everything that i’ve learned in school and im thankful that the majority of my education was free.

I think the thing im most sad about is knowing that Im not going to see most of the people that ive known for the past decade ever again in my life. some of them will be easy to let go of, but the ones that have actually made an impact on my life will be extremely hard to let go of, and i will always remember them. I know in a few years, i probably wont remember the small things, but i will remember most of the good times, like prom and grduation, and the people i spent that time with. And i will miss those times badly.

All in all, im proud of the person ive become, and the people i have in my life.

Thanks Mr. Smith for being a chill teacher.

Racism In The World Today

Jesse Jackson was a democratic nominee in the years 1984 and 1988. He was a civil rights activist and in 1966 he led a boycott to pressure caucasian buisiness’ into hiring African American employees. Although Jesse Jackson helped a lot in the progression of civil rights for colored people, befre I started doing this project, I had no idea who this man was. He ran for president twice, and never had a chance in succeeding. This was a little over 30 years ago and people then where still not over the racism of African Americans. The fact that Jesse Jackson was rarely mentioned in many U.S. History books says a lot about America still having racial problems. I think the only reason Martin Luther King Jr. was ever mentioned in History is because he was assasinated. Jesse Jackson was associated with Martin Luther King Jr. with almost everything he did, and still my generation has heard very little of him.

Over 30 years later, America now has an African American president, Barack Obama. Barack Obama is of African American, Arabic and Caucasian ethnicity. He has spent many years as a part of America’s political system. He served 3 terms as Illinois Sate Senater from 1997 to 2004 and held a seat in U.S house of representatives in 2000.

Malaria: A Human Tragedy

Posted on March 5, 2010 by denisepeace.

Malaria was first noted to be a disease by French army doctor Alphonse Laveran in 1880, but symptoms that seem to be in relation to malaria date back all the way to 1500 B.C. Malaria is spread through female mosquito bites. It starts with a person having the infection of malaria first, then when a female mosquito bites the infected person, the disease is then transmited and develops within the mosquito in about a week. Then, when the mosquito goes to have her next meal, the disease is transmited again through her saliva to the next person. After a few weeks to several months, the infection stays in the liver and parasites are released into the blood stream through red blood cells.

Malaria is very widely spread through out the tropics and the subtropics (areas nearst to the equater) such as the Americas, Asia and Africa. Each year about 300-350 million people are infected by it. Between 1-3 million people die from it. 90 percent of all deaths caused by malaria are in the sub-Sahara of Africa, mainly because of poverty. Children and pregnant women are most affected by it.

There are many different symptoms caused by malaria. The symptoms are flu like and range from, fever, headache, severe shivering, joint pain, vomiting, nausea, anemia, hemoglobinuria (inlarging of the liver), retinal damage, and convulsions. Classic symptoms of malaria are cycles of sudden coldness followed by rigor, then fever and extreme sweating lasting anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. After this period of many symptoms, they stop and the infected person starts to feel better again, but in a matter of 36 to 48 hours, the cycle of symptoms starts all over again, resulting in extreme exhaustion.  If malaria is not treated in time, it can lead to coma and death. In some cases, children that get malaria suffer from major brain damage that can cause abnormal postering, meaning that the child does not sit correctly with there limbs in awkward positions because they are suffering from pain.

People can be treated for malaria using several different antimalarial drugs. Several drugs are available to travelers to prevent them from conracting malaria. Malaria transmitions can be reduced by preventing mosquito bites by using mosquito nets, and insect repellants. Also, by draining any standing water around your house, you can reduce mosquitos laying eggs.

Many people and businesses are helping to cure malaria and reduce the spread of disease in third world countries by designing and distributing mosquito nets that kill and repell mosquitos and other harmful insects. Also by raising money to help alleviate the disease by getting the propper medical help to the counries most effected by poverty and malaria.

Another way that was used to prevent malaria when it was extremely wide spread in many countries was the chemical DDT ( dichlorodiphenyltrichloethane). DDT is a very powerful synthetic pesticide that was first synthesized in 1874. In 1939 it was released and used mainly to control the spread of malaria and typhus in World War II amoung the troops, but also very loosely used in many house holds. But in 1962, American Biologist Rachel Carson published a book called Silent Spring explaining the negative affects the chemical can have on wild life and human health. It suggested that DDT and other pesticidal chemicals may cause cancer and other health risks. After studies that confirmed DDT to be a harmful chemical and environmental risk, it was banned in 1972. If controlled, DDT could help to stop the spread of malaria and other diseases by killing off infectous insects.

Malaria is one of many harmful and deadly diseases that are constantly being spread throughout third world countries that have no money to pay for medical expenses. But they can most be controled. Every person on the planet can have an impact in saving someones life. There have been millions of lives saved by the affects of people coming together to prevent the causes of malaria and other diseases, by providing money, the propper medical care and shelter.        http://www.youtube.com/watch?sv=O0Fsw-0_ldM

Rancho Cotate High School Myths

Posted on by denisepeace.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The only problem i have with Rancho is the negativity. I’ve been at Rancho practically all for years; I’m in the second half of my senior year. I haven’t experienced other high schools, but I don’t know what would make my high school any different than the other highschools that are in this district. I’m sure that the faculty has a lot to do with the way the school is ran, but so do the students and administration. I think their are a few teachers at the ranch that have a bad reputation, and they’re not fully qualified for there job, but that’s not their fault they were sent to take over a class that they don’t completely know how to teach; their just trying to make money. That also doesn’t have an effect on the entire school. And im sure that every other highschool has the same problem. I think another problem my school has is intimidation. When I was a freshman I was very intimidated by upper classmen and not fitting in and doing good in my classes. But Rancho is what you make  it, just like life is what you make it. It depends on what kind of person you are and if you want to make your experience here positive, then you’ll do what it takes to make it positive. I think that a lot of the newer students that are going here have  heard a lot of bad rumors about Rancho and come to this school expecting the worst, and that’s what they get out of it; a bad experience. A highschool is a highschool. There’s going to be stoners, nerds, sluts, bullies, and jocks at any high school you go to no matter what. Teenagers will be teenagers and they will get into what ever they are influenced by. It truely does depend on what kind of person you are. If you’re above all the negative drama then you’re sure to have a positive experiance at any highschool.

Murder in Rohnert Park

The murder that happened in Rohnert Park on friday the 12th of February 2010 took me by surprise. I was really shocked because I’ve grown up in Rohnert Park pretty much my whole life, and throughout the time that I’ve lived here, there hasn’t ever really been anything that’s happened like that. I’m sure that Rohnert Park has some kind of history of violence, but nothing that I’ve heard of. I know there have been gun shots heard of lately and some one being stabbed a few years ago but it’s honestly surprising to many of the people that I see in my everyday life that have grown up here also. Rohnert Park is known as the friendly city, literally there is a sign when you enter Rohnert Park that says it’s the friendly city. I guess the economy probably has a lot to do with the way that people have been acting lately. Everyone is on egde and it’s understandable from all of the stresses of everday life, but I never thought that it would come down to someone being bludgened to death in my home town. I’ve read that the murderer was captured on the night of sunday february 14th and that he does have a long line of criminal offences, but Rohnert Park is not a large town. Usually things like this happen where there’s a lot of comotion and people around but Rohnert Park isn’t like that. It’s a very sleepy town. I know this town like the back of my hand; pretty much street by street, and it shocks me that some one was murdered on the grounds that I may have walked on. It scares me because it could’ve been someone I know personally. On the night that the murderer was caught I woke up to the sound of a helicopter flying over my house with a spot light shining down looking for someone. There were K-9 units searching the creek about a quarter of a mile form my house and they found the guy on the same street I live on. I just want more people to be aware of things like this. If peoples eyes are more open to things like this then I’m sure tragic events like these will be less likely to happen. My heart goes out to the man that was lost and his family. I’m sure he was just minding his own business trying to go home from a long day at work just like everyone else in this town.

My Opinion On The Earth Quake In Haiti

Posted on February 9, 2010 by denisepeace.
Categories: Uncategorized.

First, I know that the earthquake in Haiti was an extremely horrific disaster for the people that live there and had/has family or friends that live there. It’s been a very hard time for them and they need all of the help they can get, and I’m proud of all of the Americans that are participating in helping them. But that’s only one side of me. The other side feels that there are people in our own country that need help also. People struggling with poverty, disease, and war. I think that before we Americans go out trying to help people in other countrys, we should help the people in ours first. Like the situation in New Orleans; people in Louisiana are still suffering from the effects of huricane Katrina, but they aren’t getting the help, from there own country that they pay to live in, that they need to get by. And Americans deffinately didn’t act as fast when Katrina happened as we did with the earthquake in Haiti. I honestly feel that America is using this disaster to make our country look better to the others surrounding us. America isn’t the most liked country these days, and I think this was just a cop-out to get people loving the USA again. Everyones donations have been helping out tremendously, but I don’t think all of the celebritys taking a part in it is just for the help of Haiti. I think they’re doing to get more popularity out of the situation. I’m not saying it’s all a scam, because a lot of the people helping out are honestly doing it from the heart and wanting to help those who have lost so much. But it can’t all be for the good of Haiti. I don’t think America works that way anymore.

Gay Dating Site’s Super Bowl Ad Rejected by CBS

CBS television network declined a gay dating ad to be a part of the super bowl commercials on super bowl sunday . CBS representatives said they had to decline the ad because of financial reasons, but the makers of the mancrunch dating site says that there is probably more to it than that. CBS states that the ad is not only financially straining, but not within superbowl advertisemnt brodcasting standards. Another dating-site spokes woman says that CBS’ decline of the ad is just pure descrimination. CBS’ defense of their refusal does not make any sense however, because the providers of the mancrunch ad offered to pay for the commercial fully in cash.  In my opinion, this is definately descrimination. It has to be; not only because mancrunch wanted their commercial to be advertised during the super bowl, which Americans think only straight men watch, and straight men don’t want to see commercials about homosexual men. Also because all Americans aren’t completely comfortable with homosexuals coming out of the closet. I do believe in gay rights, like gay marraige, and it angers me when people that aren’t in any relation with the gays are trying to make life harder for them, just because they have a different preferance then most of us. The mancrunch ad should completely be shown during the super bowl commercials, I think just to open peoples minds. Open Americans up to different options so they wont be so ignorant when it comes to homosexuality. Everybody on this planet is different in their own way, and we should all be accepting of everyone.

Babies May Pick Up Language Cues In Womb 11/06/09

This article that i just read from npr popular news is about how while babies are in the womb, they can hear their mothers speak and when they are first born and cry, their cries sound similar to the language that their mothers speak. There were more than a thousand different recordings made on thirty different German babies and thirty different French babies at the Center for Prespeech Development and Developmental Disorders at the University of Wurzburg in Germany. Studies showed that French babies have a higher tone when they end their cries and German babies do not. This is due to the French and German languages. French, at the end of every word, leave a higher intonation then Germans do. I think that the studies done are very true and factual because you learn how to speak by hearing the people around you talking and pronouncing words, and a babies cry is a way for them to communicate.

H2O on the Moon 11/13/09

Earlier today, people from NASA stated they have discovered 26 gallons of water ice on the moon. Project scientist at NASA Anthony Colaprete announced that the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, discovered it when they intentionally crashed into a crater on the moon on this passed October the 9th. Now that NASA has discovered water on the moon, it should be possible for people to create a lunar space station for people to live on. Michael Wargo, chief lunar scientist at NASA stated that there could be several different reasons for there being water on the moon, some of them being giant molecular clouds, or comments. Before I read the article on it, I didn’t think it was possible for water to be on the moon because of the lack of oxygen in the moons atmosphere, but now I guess it’s possible for water to be on the moon, and people never discovered it before because there are parts of the moon the we haven’t explored yet because it’s in a continuous shadow. All in all, I think this is partial news; neither good nor bad because we aren’t at the point in science where we can actually contain the water, so it’s not really making any difference for the people on Earth.

32% raise on college tuition in California 11/20/09

All UC colleges in California are raising the tuition prices, meaning that each student may have to pay at least $2,500 more dollars for their college fee. Many UC students held protests on the UC campuses on Thursday November 19th 2009. The following day many students at UC Berkley in Berkley California barricaded themselves in a part of a building on the campus. A few other UC schools in California are holding protests also, such as UCLA and UC Davis. This new 32% raise will not be including the price of the students living on campus and/or paying for books and additional fees. It’s obvious that the state of California doesn’t have sufficient funds this year for most campuses state wide, but I seriously disagree that the money the state doesn’t have for education should be coming out of the students pockets. It’s not fair to the students. They already pay thousands of dollars every year just to attend the school they want to. I feel like every person should have the right to a proper education, and people can’t get a proper education when it’s too expensive for them to go to the school that they think would give them the best education. I think the funds should be coming from other places. California must accumulate hundreds of billions of dollars every year. Where is all of that money going? I think if we had better people running our state, and our country, we would be in a much better condition.

Two Pairs Of Scissors:

Yesterday on December 10th 2009, my boyfriends mom got me too pairs of professional hair cutting scissors for a christmas present. For about a year and a half now I’ve been cutting my friends’ hair  as favors and never really done it for money or anything, but I’ve learned in that time that I actually have a knack for it and I’m not too bad at it. So I decided to make a career out of it. After I get out of highschool I would like to attend a high-end Cosmotology School somewhere in northern California, and once I get out of school and get a few years of experience working in the feild I would love to own a smalll salon. I think that cutting hair and doing make up is a form of art. When you have a blank canvas like someone who has really long hair and they don’t care what you do with it, you can just go crazy and give them a hair cut that looks really good on them personnally. It’s kind of like trimming bushes. When you have a really messy front yard, you trim the bushes to give them a good shape, and it makes the yard look a little bit more put together. My main reason for wanting to cut hair and possibly do peoples make up is expressing myself. It makes me feel good to make other peole look good and make something pretty and shapely and colorful. I don’t think I could ever have a career just to make money. If I wasn’t having a good time or enjoying what I’m doing, then it’s not worth it. I want to do something I enjoy and that makes other people happy.
